Lady Ballers (2023 film)

Category: Sport comedy/satire

-----

From the same scallywags that brought you "What Is A Woman?" comes another cinematic masterpiece - Lady Ballers.

Let's get the politics out of the way first - being a Daily Wire production, I have no doubt that people who have a particular political or social ideology would instantly decry this movie as "offensive" prior to even pressing play simply because it's a Daily Wire production, but in all reality, Lady Ballers' purpose isn't offence - it's satire. And while Lady Ballers does indeed satirise certain ideas really well, one thing we need to keep in mind is that satire is one of the pillars of comedy, nay, of western society. Sure, be offended at the satirisation of men in women's sports and of gender ideology, but if you're not likewise offended at the satirisation of the 43rd President of the USA in the series "That's My Bush!" or of the satirisation of corporate culture in the The Office, you're really just picking and choosing what to be offended by.

Matter of fact, it's actually not gender ideology that loses the most in this film - it's journalism. You'll see what I mean if you watch.

Last Ride (2009 film)

Category: Australian crime drama.

-----

As soon as the credits rolled, my first thought was - never ask Hugo Weaving to look after my kids!

Now, I will definitely recommend this movie - it is a quality production that doesn't get anywhere near as much credit or exposure as it deserves, but be warned - this movie is not easy watching.

The whole premise of Last Ride - based on the Denise Young novel of the same name - is that Weaving plays Kev, a father with a criminal record on the run from police with his young son in tow, and not having much money and wanting to avoid exposure, Kev puts himself and his son in some pretty uncomfortable situations as he takes increasingly desperate measures to avoid the consequences of his actions.

Hostel (2005 film)

Category: Gore horror/comedy

-----

It's gory, it's sexually explicit in parts, it's full of bad language, it's in bad taste, but most of all, Eli Roth's Hostel is stupid fun!

The long and short of Hostel is that three tourists are backpacking through Europe to try fulfil their hedonistic desires when they are told of a hostel in Bratislava, Slovakia, where they can fulfil their wildest dreams. Unbeknownst to the three, almost everyone in and around the hostel are part of a secret group that traps tourists, takes them deep into an abandoned building and allows rich clients to kill them for a fee.

While Josh and Oli are taken and killed, Paxton, through some dumb (and sometimes hilarious) luck, manages to survive his kidnapping and attempted murder to eventually extract revenge against those who got him in that situation in the first place. That's essentially the plot - it's not incredibly deep.
