Sicario 2 (2018 film)

Category: Americans vs Mexican drug cartel action thriller

-----

"There's no way he survived that!"

Those words was the second-to-last thing I said as this movie came to an end. The last thing I actually said was "oh look - they reflected the opening scene in the ending! That's never been done in film-making before!".

It’s also quite possible that I at some stage said (quietly, under my breath) "Damn! Dora looks hot as a schoolgirl!". If you know, you know.

But in all seriousness, if you enjoyed the first Sicario, this is more of the same, but on a bigger scale and now with extra deus-ex-machina thrown in for good measure.

The plot summarised:

Mexican cartels help launch a suicide bomb attack in America. America decides to fuck with the cartels as revenge. Good guy Americans kidnap the daughter of cartel leader as a false-flag operation (definitely a good guy move). The good guy Americans decide to return kidnapped cartel daughter back to Mexico. The good guy Mexicans escorting the bad good guy Americans turn out to be bad guy Mexicans in disguise as good guy Mexicans and start shooting at the bad good guy Americans. The bad good guy Americans shoot a whole lot of bad guy Mexicans in Mexico which causes the the bosses of the bad good guy Americans to go into damage control so they disown the bad good guy Americans to make themselves look like the good bad guys while really being the bad good bad guys. Kidnapped cartel daughter goes missing, kidnapped cartel daughter gets found, kidnapped cartel daughter and honorable bad good guy American decide to try sneak across the US border for safety. Right as they're about to cross, cartel member recognises CIA agent from chance encounter in supermarket, cartel kidnaps CIA agent, cartel shoot CIA agent and leave him for dead, CIA agent survives being shot in the head, no-one lives happily ever after.

---

It's a decent action film that carries on the spirit of the first film, though it helps greatly if you are up to speed with Central American geopolitics. Big set pieces, kinda plausible plot, big guns and big action. Enjoyable. But I really did feel swerved when that guy woke up from the point-blank gunshot to the head. Out of all the bullshit things I've seen in movies, that one felt extra bullshitty.

FINAL RATING: 3.5/5
